Course overview
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Although HSV-1 is associated mainly with oral herpes (commonly called cold sores and fever blisters) and HSV-2 mainly with genital herpes, both types of the virus can cause outbreaks in either location. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of genital herpes, its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
