Course overview

An enterocutaneous fistula (EF) is an abnormal connection between the intestine (entero) and the skin (cutaneous), through which intestinal fluids leak. Care for a patient with an EF is multifaceted because the loss of effluent from the fistula causes electrolyte disturbances, severe skin irritation, and a variety of physiological and psychological issues related to the unsightly appearance of the affected area, the foul odor of the drainage, and the patient’s overall prognosis. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of how to provide care for a patient with an EF. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
