Course overview

Posterior nasal packing refers to the introduction of packing material such as gauze, a Foley catheter, a nasal sponge/tampon, or inflatable nasal balloon catheter into the posterior of the nose to stop posterior epistaxis (i.e., nosebleed originating from the posterior third of the nose, usually from branches of the sphenopalatine arteries, the vidian artery, or the ethmoid arteries). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of assisting with posterior nasal packing for epistaxis including why this is performed, how to assist with packing, and to aid in caring for the patient requiring this intervention. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
