Course overview
An implanted venous access port (IVAP); also known as an implantable infusion port, portacath (Note: PORT-A-CATH is a registered trademark of Smiths Medical), totally implanted port, or subcutaneous port, is a type of central venous access device. IVAPs are small, disc-shaped reservoirs that typically are implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of a patient’s upper anterior chest wall. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the procedures involved in the care and maintenance of IVAPs, and to aid in the treatment of patients with these devices. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
