Course overview

Lipid emulsion (LE), also known as intravenous (I.V.) fat emulsion (IVFE) or intralipids, is a lipid mixture consisting of medium- and long-chain triglycerides (MCT/LCT; e.g., fats, fatty acids) and fat-soluble vitamins that is administered intravenously, either separately or as a component of parenteral nutrition (PN; i.e., nutritional therapy that is delivered directly into the bloodstream in patients whose nutritional needs cannot be met orally or enterally [e.g., via gastric or nasogastric feeding tube]). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of how to administer lipid emulsion therapy. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
