Course overview

Herpes simplex virus (HSV, either HSV type 1 [associated with cold sores in the mouth] or HSV type 2 [associated with genital lesions]) is a highly contagious virus transmitted by mucocutaneous contact. Neonatal herpes occurs in newborns whose mothers have active or latent genital HSV infection. The virus is typically transmitted vertically (also known as mother-to-child transmission) as the newborn passes through the infected birth canal. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of how to care for the newborn with neonatal herpes. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
