Course overview

Mumps is a viral disease caused by a single-stranded RNA paramyxovirus and is characterized by parotitis, an inflammation of the parotid glands, one of three pairs of salivary glands located in front of and below the ears. Sensorineural deafness, defined as a hearing disorder caused by damage to the cochlear nerve or to parts of the cochlear sensorineural system, is a rare complication of mumps. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of mumps-related deafness, including its clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
