PARENT TEACHING: MENTAL ILLNESS IN CHILDREN

Course overview

Mental illness affects nearly 1 in 5 children and adolescents, and involves a broad range of acute and chronic emotional and behavioral problems. Psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence include mood disorders (e.g., depression, bipolar affective disorder), suicidal ideation, adjustment disorders, schizophrenia, conduct disorders (e.g., oppositional defiant disorder, violent behavior), anxiety disorders (e.g., school avoidance, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and somatoform disorders. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the process for teaching parents about mental illness in children. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
