Course overview

Neurogenic bladder (NB; also called neuropathic bladder) is a urinary voiding disorder characterized by dysfunction of the bladder, ureter, sphincter, and urethra as a result of motor neuron lesions or abnormal autonomic nervous system tissue that malfunctions during urine storage and emptying. The anatomic location—cerebral, spinal, or peripheral—of the lesions or abnormal tissue determines the type of voiding dysfunction; most cases involve both motor and sensory dysfunction. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of NB, its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
