PARENTERAL NUTRITION: ADMINISTERING VIA PERIPHERAL VENOUS ACCESS

Course overview

Parenteral nutrition (PN; also referred to as hyperalimentation, intravenous alimentation, and parenteral hyperalimentation) refers to the intravenous (I.V.) administration of liquid nutrition. Although some formulations of PN can be administered via peripheral venous access (PVA), the guidelines issued by the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) recommend administration of PN through central lines to reduce the risk for phlebitis. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of PPN, including administration, I.V. equipment, and complications, and to aid in caring for the patient undergoing this procedure. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
