Course overview

Parkinson disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder related to a deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine. This chronic, debilitating condition is characterized by a variable combination of tremor, bradykinesia (i.e., slowed ability to start and continue movements), rigidity, and postural instability. In PD, degenerative changes occur in the substantia nigra, an area of the brain that produces dopamine. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of PD, its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
