Course overview

Melanoma is a public health problem, with an incidence that has been increasing at an exponential rate since 1940. The connection between melanoma risk and sun exposure is complex, but recent evidence suggests that the highest risks are associated with intermittent exposure and sunburn at any age. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of relevant research on ultraviolet radiation risk of melanoma, including evidence-based information on the types of ultraviolet light, connection between melanoma risk and sun exposure, the affect of latitude on risk, types of sun exposure, the affect of individual levels of skin sensitivity to sun exposure, prevention strategies, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
