Course overview

Mesothelioma (MTA) is a rare and aggressive cancer occurring most often as a result of prolonged asbestos exposure that affects the mesothelial cells that line body cavities; the pleura (i.e., membrane lining of the lungs and thoracic cavity) is the most common site but the pericardium or testis are affected in some cases. MTA is difficult to treat and carries a poor prognosis, with most patients dying from respiratory failure. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of relevant research on the general principles of caring for a patient with MTA including why this is important and information to provide to the patient and their family. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
