METABOLIC SYNDROME IN PREGNANCY

Course overview

Metabolic syndrome (MS; also called syndrome X and insulin resistance syndrome) refers to a group of clinical findings and metabolic disturbances that have been associated with an increased risk for diabetes mellitus, type 2 (DM2) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The primary characteristics of MS are insulin resistance, which is considered a precursor to DM2, and dyslipidemia, a disorder of lipid metabolism that can lead to atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial ischemia (MI), peripheral artery disease (PAD), and stroke. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of MSP, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
