PATIENT EDUCATION: TEACHING THE PREGNANT PATIENT WITH DIABETES MELLITUS, TYPE 1

Course overview

Preconception counseling for the pregnant patient with diabetes mellitus, type 1 (DM1) ideally should begin at least 6 months before conception to optimize preconception glycemic control in the first trimester and prevent adverse fetal and maternal outcomes such as congenital malformations and preterm labor. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner information about teaching pregnant patients about DM1 in pregnancy. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
