The purpose of this course is to teach professionals how to help people overcome co-occurring substance use disorders and mental illness. This course stresses treating both illnesses in the same place, at the same time, with the same team. Adapting Twelve Step principles and strategies to dual recovery is also stressed. One of the key adaptations will be employing a five-step process for taking medications appropriately. The course provides numerous how to suggestions, including ideas for running treatment groups. Participants will be asked to read Celebrating Small Victories: A Counselor's Manual For Treating Chronic Mental Illness And Substance Abuse. They will then take a 46 item test. If they answer 75 percent of the questions correctly, the will receive a certificate for eight hours.
