Course overview
Understanding trauma and the ways traumatic events affect young people is essential to promoting recovery and resilience. This understanding also helps ensure that youth are not retraumatized through their interactions with human services or justice systems. A trauma informed approach recognizes that life experiences, and the ways those experiences may influence current behaviors and functioning, are critical to improving engagement and outcomes. This training will provide a brief overview of trauma and its potential impacts on children and youth. It will also highlight how a safe and effective relationship was built between a young person and her GAL. Participants will gain insight into the comprehensive and often long-lasting effects of trauma, helping to reduce the risk of retraumatizing young people and their families.
