PULMONARY DISEASE, CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE (COPD): GENDER DIFFERENCES

Course overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by persistent obstruction of the airway, progressive distention of the alveoli in the lungs, and destruction of the pulmonary parenchyma that lead to a progressive deterioration in lung function. Although COPD has historically been considered a disease of men due to higher smoking rates among men than women, the prevalence of COPD is increasing among women. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of current knowledge about the relationships between gender and COPD, including information on causes, prevalence, risk factors, and treatment strategies. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
