Course overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by persistent obstruction of the airway, progressive distention of the alveoli in the lungs, decreased lung compliance, decreased diffusing capacity, airway hyperreactivity, systemic inflammation, small airway narrowing, and destruction of the pulmonary parenchyma that lead to a progressive deterioration in lung function. Chronic bronchitis, one of the clinical manifestations of COPD, is defined as the presence of a daily productive cough for 3 months or more each year for 2 consecutive years. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of current knowledge of the nutritional treatment of individuals with COPD and to aid in the care of patients with this diagnosis. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
