Course overview

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a rare presentation of herpes zoster (HZ) that causes an acute peripheral facial neuropathy, often of the 7th cranial nerve (CN) and geniculate ganglia. Signs and symptoms of RHS include an erythematous vesicular rash on the head, on the neck, in the ear canal, in the auricle, and/or on mucous membranes of the oropharynx; facial nerve palsy; tinnitus; hearing loss; visual disturbance; vertigo; nystagmus; and ataxia. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment for patients with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
