Course overview

Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is a method of creating optimal physiological conditions to permit rapid tracheal intubation by administration of a sedative (to induce unconsciousness), followed immediately by a paralyzing dose of a neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA). In some cases, a pretreatment medication is also administered to reduce the adverse effects of the other RSI medications and the physiologic response to laryngoscopy (e.g., bradycardia, hypoxemia, cough/gag reflex, and increases in intracranial, intraocular, and intragastric pressures). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of RSI in the adult. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
