Course overview

Refeeding syndrome can occur when enteral, parenteral, or oral feeding is reinstated in an individual who is malnourished due to starvation or massive weight loss. Refeeding syndrome results from a rapid change from catabolism (i.e., conversion of fat and protein to energy), which occurs during starvation, to normal metabolism of glucose. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of how to provide care for patients with or at risk for refeeding syndrome. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
