Course overview
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by difficulty with perceptions, a distorted sense of reality, disturbances of thought and language, and withdrawal from social contact. Schizophrenia is treated with antipsychotic medications, both conventional and new generation. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is sometimes used in conjunction with antipsychotic medications to help treat severe psychosis, catatonia, and suicidality in patients with schizophrenia. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of treating schizophrenia with ECT. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the posttest and evaluation form.
