Course overview

Rhesus (Rh) isoimmunization refers to the protective physiological response that occurs when a pregnant woman is exposed to the blood of her Rh-incompatible fetus; it involves the production of antibodies against fetal RBC antigens that can be life-threatening to a fetus in subsequent pregnancies, and cause a severe reaction in the affected woman if in the future she requires a blood transfusion. Routine Rh screening for fetal incompatibility of all pregnant women, followed by pharmacologic treatment to suppress the immune response in affected women, protects the mother and subsequent fetuses. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the effects of Rh isoimmunization, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
