Course overview

Hemiplegia is a common and disabling complication of stroke. Stroke involving the left cerebral hemisphere may lead to right hemiplegia (i.e., paralysis on the right side of the body) and stroke involving the right cerebral hemisphere may lead to left hemiplegia (i.e., paralysis on the left side of the body) because the motor nerve fibers cross in the medulla before entering the spinal cord. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the stroke complication of hemiplegia, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
