Course overview
Sexual masochism (SM) is a paraphilic type of compulsive sexual behavior disorder characterized by experiencing sexual arousal in response to psychological or physical pain, usually inflicted by another person who is stimulated by sexual sadism. Acting on the desire for pain may serve as a way to cope with excessive anxiety, depression, or other underlying, untreated chronic psychological disorders. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of sexual masochism, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
