Course overview

Sheehan syndrome (SS) is a condition characterized by maternal pituitary insufficiency secondary to ischemic necrosis of the pituitary gland that occurs as a result of significant postpartum hemorrhage of 1,000 mL or more. The pituitary gland normally becomes enlarged in women during pregnancy and because of this, is sensitive to ischemia, which can occur from postpartum hemorrhage. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of Sheehan syndrome, its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment for patients with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
