SICKLE CELL DISEASE IN PREGNANCY

Course overview

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder caused by a genetic mutation that results in abnormal hemoglobin that causes red blood cells (RBCs) to be sickle-shaped, stiff, and sticky instead of round and flexible. Sickle-shaped RBCs clump together, occluding capillaries and cutting impairing circulation, which often results in painful sickle (vasoocclusive) crises, which can lead to ischemia, infarction, and organ damage. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of SCD during pregnancy, including the potential complications that the pregnant woman may experience, and treatment for patients with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
