Course overview
Standard precautions, previously referred to as universal precautions, are first-line infection control measures designed to prevent the spread of infection by minimizing clinician contact with blood and other body fluids, broken skin, mucous membranes, and contaminated surfaces. Standard precautions are also referred to as tier one precautions because they should be followed when caring for all patients, regardless of whether or not the patient has a known communicable disease or infection. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the components of Standard Precautions and how to follow Standard Precautions in the healthcare setting. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
