STROKE REHABILITATION: EVALUATION AND INTERVENTIONS FOR NEUROGENIC DYSPHAGIA

Course overview

Neurogenic dysphagia, a swallowing dysfunction that frequently occurs after stroke, is a serious complication that can result in choking, aspiration pneumonia, nutritional disturbances, electrolyte imbalances, and death. Early detection of dysphagia after stroke and appropriate management are a priority during the acute phase of stroke care to avoid the risk of aspiration and other serious complications associated with neurogenic dysphagia. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of evidence-based information on the evaluation and interventions for neurogenic dysphagia in stroke rehabilitation, including the serious consequences of neurogenic dysphagia and methods of screening for and diagnosing neurogenic dysphagia, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
