STROKE REHABILITATION: GAIT RETRAINING USING FUNCTIONAL ELECTRICAL STIMULATION

Course overview

Stroke results from an alteration in blood supply to the brain that leads to either deprivation of oxygen (i.e., ischemic stroke) or flooding with blood (i.e., hemorrhagic stroke); hemiplegia—defined as paralysis on one side of the body—is a common and disabling complication of stroke that has a significant impact on walking ability. Gait recovery is an important objective of rehabilitation for stroke patients. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of gait retraining using FES in stroke rehabilitation, including types of FES and patient outcomes for FES, to aid in caring for the stroke patient receiving this therapy. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
