STROKE REHABILITATION: TAKING CARE OF THE CAREGIVER

Course overview

In recognition that excessive caregiver burden can impact not only stroke survivors but also caregivers’ quality of life (QOL), increasing attention has been drawn to the needs of nonprofessional caregivers, or individuals who care for disabled individuals. The majority of caregivers (62%) are nonprofessional caregivers who lack medical or nursing experience yet provide challenging physical care for stroke survivors who need day-to-day assistance with eating, bathing, dressing, ambulation, and transfer. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of relevant research regarding taking care of the caregiver during stroke rehabilitation, including evidence-based information on the causes of caregiver burden and types of caregiver support that may be provided by the healthcare clinician. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
