PATIENT EDUCATION: HOME CARE -- TEACHING INTERMITTENT SELF-CATHETERIZATION IN ADULTS

Course overview

Teaching intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) in home care is the process of teaching patients to safely insert and remove a urinary catheter several times a day to empty the bladder. ISC is an intimate and invasive procedure performed to manage voiding dysfunction, promote continence, avoid overdistending the bladder, reduce the incidence of urinary complications, and protect the kidneys from further damage. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner information about teaching the patient who performs ISC. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
