SYNDROME OF INAPPROPRIATE ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE SECRETION (SIADH)

Course overview

Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is characterized by excessive secretion of antidiuretic hormone (ADH; also known as vasopressin) by the posterior pituitary gland, even when serum osmolality (concentration of particulate in serum) is low. A low serum osmolality typically protects against excessive secretion of ADH by feedback mechanisms that stop secretion of ADH when serum osmolality is normal or low. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of SIADH, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
