URINARY DIVERSION: CARING FOR THE PATIENT WITH AN ILEAL CONDUIT

Course overview

A urinary diversion is a surgically created method of releasing urine from the body when the urinary system is damaged or can no longer function properly (e.g., by bladder disease or dysfunction that results in blockage of urine flow so that urine accumulates in the ureters and kidneys). There are two basic types of urinary diversions: noncontinent—where the urine drains continuously into an ostomy bag secured to the patient’s anterior abdominal wall—and continent—where urine is retained within the body until released by the patient. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of how to provide care for the patient with an NUD. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
