VITAMIN K: ADMINISTERING IN NEWBORNS

Course overview

Vitamin K is routinely ordered prophylactically for newborns to prevent vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB, formerly called Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn) and other neonatal coagulation disorders. Newborns are deficient of vitamin K, an essential fat-soluble micronutrient that is necessary for activation of crucial clotting factors which aid in blood coagulation, clotting proteins, activation of prothrombin to thrombin, and platelet activation and aggregation. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of vitamin K administration in newborns. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
