Course overview

Transcranial Doppler (TCD) monitoring is a noninvasive neuroimaging method used to estimate the velocity of blood flow through the cerebral arteries. TCD sonography, together with clinical neurological examination, is used to evaluate the severity of cerebral vasospasm, localize intracranial occlusion and/or stenosis, detect and localize cerebral emboli, monitor hemodynamic intracranial perfusion, and assess the impact of therapeutic interventions (e.g., thrombolytic therapy) on intracranial perfusion. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of TCD monitoring and how to utilize the submandibular window during TCD monitoring in order to better care for patients. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
