Course overview

Careful monitoring for signs and symptoms of transfusion reactions is necessary during all transfusions of blood and blood products because of the serious, potentially life-threatening nature of these events. Transfusion reactions fall into several categories; they occur as either acute or delayed reactions, and signs/symptoms range in severity from uncomfortable to life-threatening. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of how to monitor for transfusion reactions in the critically ill patient. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
