Course overview

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. The effects of TBI can be acute or chronic, and nurses in all settings will encounter patients who have experienced TBI. Nurses must be prepared to provide competent care for these patients. Nurses must understand the various types of TBI, be able to identify populations at risk for TBI, as well as populations that may experience TBI related health disparities, be able to recall necessary assessments that must occur after a TBI, be knowledgeable regarding signs and symptoms of TBI, be able to identify the various treatment methods used for TBI, and describe nursing interventions that can be implemented to improve TBI outcomes. In this course, the participant will explore the causes, assessment, and treatment of TBI while developing a deeper understanding of the nurse's role in supporting recovery. Learners will gain practical knowledge to help improve outcomes and reduce disparities for patients with TBI.
