Course overview

Living in the Material World explores the wide range of modern ophthalmic lens and frame materials available to opticians and patients in the 21st century. This course reviews the characteristics, advantages, and limitations of common lens materials, including glass, CR-39, high-index plastics, polycarbonate, Trivex, and hybrid materials, with special emphasis on index of refraction, Abbe value, and specific gravity. Participants will also gain a practical understanding of metal and plastic frame materials, including durability, adjustability, corrosion resistance, and solvent sensitivity. Emphasis is placed on real-world dispensing considerations and adopting a thoughtful, case-by-case approach to material selection that prioritizes patient safety, comfort, optics, and value.
