Course overview

This two-hour home study course provides Florida licensed opticians with a comprehensive and practical review of the laws and administrative rules that govern the practice of opticianry in the state of Florida. This course is required for license renewal for all opticians every two years. Participants examine the structure and hierarchy of Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Code as they relate specifically to opticianry, including FS 484 Part I, FS 456, FS 120, FAC 64B12, and FAC 64B29. The course explains the purpose and authority of the Board of Opticianry, licensure and renewal requirements, optical establishment permitting, standards of practice, supervision of unlicensed personnel, apprenticeship rules, disciplinary procedures, and more. Emphasis is placed on real-world application of the laws and rules, with detailed explanations of common compliance issues such as prescription retention, duplication of lenses, advertising requirements, minimum equipment standards, continuing education obligations, and inspection procedures. Participants also review recent regulatory developments affecting opticians, including licensure endorsement pathways, parental consent requirements for minors, and federal laws related to privacy and prescription release. By the conclusion of the course, opticians will be better prepared to practice confidently within legal boundaries, reduce regulatory risk, and maintain compliance in both clinical and business aspects of optical practice.
