Course overview

The Apprentice Orientation Class is a comprehensive Florida Board approved home study program designed to prepare registered opticianry apprentices for successful progression toward licensure. It is an approved home-study version of the two-hour course that every apprentice is required to complete during the first year of his or her apprenticeship. This course introduces apprentices to the history of opticianry, the evolution of apprenticeship as a professional training model, and the essential role opticians play in protecting the visual health and safety of the public. Participants receive a clear and practical overview of Florida Statutes Chapters 484 and 456, along with the applicable sections of the Florida Administrative Code that govern apprenticeship, supervision, and standards of practice. The course explains in plain language the requirements for earning apprenticeship credit, including sponsor supervised training, accredited opticianry education, continuing education, and Board approved career progression programs. Emphasis is placed on understanding supervision requirements, documentation responsibilities, and common compliance errors that can delay or jeopardize licensure. In addition to legal and technical requirements, the course examines the apprentice sponsor relationship as a structured mentoring process, highlighting communication, accountability, and professional conduct. By completing this orientation, apprentices gain the knowledge and perspective necessary to build strong foundational skills, protect patients, support sponsors, and move efficiently and responsibly toward becoming licensed opticians in the state of Florida.
