This course equips school nurses and other school-based healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, comprehensive care for students with Type 1 diabetes. Participants will review the pathophysiology and treatment of Type 1 diabetes, including insulin therapy, continuous glucose monitoring, and prevention of acute and long-term complications. Emphasis is placed on school-specific monitoring and intervention strategies, such as developing and implementing Individualized Health Plans and 504 Plans, managing hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, and responding to diabetic emergencies. The course also focuses on collaboration with families, healthcare providers, and school staff, as well as age-appropriate education for students and their peers to reduce stigma, promote inclusion, and support optimal health and learning outcomes.
