Navigating Access to Care: Veterinarian Roles and Goals Inside and Outside the Shelter (On Demand)

Course overview

Veterinarians wear many hats when it comes to providing access to veterinary care and interact with many invested partners along the way: staff, volunteers, community members, adopters, ACOs, municipalities, administration, board members, and medical teams, to name a few. In this episode, we will center the conversation around the roles and goals of veterinarians who provide services inside and outside the animal shelter and what "access to care" means in these contexts. The discussion will include how to balance goals between medical and operational teams, staff and community members, and shelter medicine and private practice providers. We will review the impacts of services like community vaccine clinics and high-volume surgery practices on shelter medicine and veterinarians working in these spaces and talk about how these efforts influence what services should be prioritized for shelter and community access to care programs.
