Course overview

The human aging process is universal and inevitable. However, many physiological changes formerly attributed to senescence and disuse may be slowed by incorporating mind body exercises in later years. Studies show that intention based exercise programs for seniors promote good health, prevent chronic disease, and improve the hallmarks of frailty such as low body mass, strength, and mobility. This INR webinar Power of Intentional Movement explores evidence based strategies for applying mindful and intentional movement principles to exercise and physical activity in long term care environments. Nursing Home Administrators will note the material presented herein addresses the integration of intentional movement to support physical function, emotional regulation, fall prevention, and cognitive resilience in elderly and infirmed populations. A wide variety of population appropriate interventions are introduced including Tai Chi, chair yoga, attentional flow exercises, mindful walking, and breath centered activities that are adapted for varying levels of mobility and cognition found within long term care environments. Clinical benefits of intention based movement in older adults include the following. One enhances balance, proprioception, and coordination and reduces fall risk. Two supports emotional regulation and stress resilience. Three slows cognitive decline by activating prefrontal cortex and hippocampal networks. Daily exercise produces an array of benefits for older adults for prevention and treatment of chronic conditions that may occur in later life. Studies show that increased daily physical activity and targeted intention based exercise routines are as effective or more effective than medications and far safer. Exercise programs may also be tailored for nursing home residents who are unable to walk. Multicomponent chair based interventions can improve motor functions and cognition in non ambulatory residents. This INR continuing education course Power of Intentional Movement will introduce and demonstrate clinical uses of exercise therapy physical activity sports and games to enhance quality of life for nursing home residents who suffer from multi morbidity and dependency. Multicomponent exercise programs chair yoga and chair assisted exercise help to improve motor functions cognition and well being for nursing home residents who are unable to walk thus preventing further decline.
