Course overview

This course provides Florida Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) with a comprehensive, state-specific review of the legal, clinical, and ethical responsibilities involved in prescribing controlled substances. It covers the statutory requirements outlined in Florida Statutes 456.0301 and 893, as well as Florida Board of Nursing Rule 64B9, ensuring APRNs understand the regulatory framework governing controlled substance prescribing. Learners will examine best practices for patient assessment, treatment planning, and monitoring, with an emphasis on safe opioid and controlled substance prescribing. The course also addresses required strategies for preventing misuse, addiction, and diversion, including mandatory use of the state's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, E-FORCSE. Additionally, it prepares APRNs to manage complex clinical scenarios, document legally sufficient records, and counsel patients on safe use, storage, and disposal of controlled substances.
