Substance use disorders (SUDs) represent a complex, chronic medical condition affecting the brain, behavior, and overall health. Patients with substance use disorders frequently present with co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and social challenges that complicate assessment, treatment, and long-term recovery. This course provides healthcare professionals with an in-depth examination of substance use disorders, including neurobiology, clinical presentation, screening and diagnosis, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment approaches, harm-reduction strategies, ethical considerations, and interdisciplinary care models. Emphasis is placed on trauma-informed care, patient safety, relapse prevention, and reducing stigma within healthcare settings.
