Course overview

Dentists should actively participate in screening and managing sleep apnea patients within their practice because they are uniquely positioned to identify the signs and symptoms of this serious and often undiagnosed condition. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), the most common form, occurs when the airway becomes blocked during sleep, leading to repeated interruptions in breathing. Left untreated, sleep apnea can contribute to serious health issues such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and excessive daytime fatigue. Many signs of sleep apnea can be detected during routine dental visits. Dentists routinely evaluate oral and facial structures, including the size and position of the tongue, jaw, and soft palate- all factors that can contribute to airway obstruction. Symptoms such as tooth grinding (bruxism), a scalloped tongue, dry mouth, and signs of worn dentition may be early indicators of sleep-disordered breathing. This places the dentist in a critical position to initiate discussions and refer patients for proper diagnosis via sleep studies. Beyond screening, dentists trained in dental sleep medicine can fabricate custom oral appliances that reposition the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open during sleep. These appliances are a proven and effective alternative to CPAP therapy, especially for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea or those who cannot tolerate CPAP machines. By incorporating sleep apnea screening and management into their practice, dentists help improve their patients' quality of sleep and overall health and demonstrate a commitment to comprehensive, whole-body care. This elevates the general dentist's role as a healthcare provider, strengthens interprofessional collaboration, and adds a valuable service to the practice. Involvement in sleep apnea care is both a clinical responsibility and an opportunity for dentists to make a meaningful impact on their patients' lives. The course will combine engaging lectures, interactive student participation, and video demonstrations to illustrate key concepts and clinical procedures. This blended approach enhances understanding, encourages critical thinking, and provides visual context for practical applications. Participants will have opportunities to discuss cases, ask questions, and observe techniques in action.
