Course overview

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 10% of American homes are considered aging-ready, highlighting the home environment as a major obstacle for older adults (age 65 and older) who wish to remain in their homes as they age (Vespa et al., 2020). "Aging in place" refers to the ability of older adults to live in their own homes and communities safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. Physical and occupational therapy play a pivotal role in supporting aging in place by enhancing the independence, functionality, and quality of life of older adults. The primary aim of aging in place is to enhance health, well-being, and quality of life by ensuring access to home modifications and community-based resources that support independent living (Gustavson et al., 2023). Aging in place is a preferred option for many older adults who wish to maintain their familiar environment and lifestyle. It involves not only physical health but also emotional well-being, social connections, and the ability to perform daily activities. As individuals age, they may face challenges that affect their ability to live independently. Physical and occupational therapy can address these challenges through specialized interventions and support. This course will examine how integrating physical and occupational therapy service interventions into a senior's plan of care can enhance independence and overall well-being. This course will offer a practical framework to support clinicians in educating older adults in a patient-centered approach, tailoring interventions to the specific needs, preferences, and goals of the older adult.
