Course overview

Over 6 million Americans are currently living with dementia, a number that continues to rise each year. Yet, despite this growing need, caregivers and clinicians often focus on the challenges of dementia, such as aggression, confusion, and withdrawal, rather than the remaining strengths of individuals living with the condition. Shifting to a "CAN DO" approach that emphasizes capability over inability not only fosters dignity and engagement but can also enhance functional outcomes and potentially slow symptom progression. Failure to implement these strategies can lead to increased caregiver burnout, decreased quality of life, and missed opportunities for meaningful connection. Clinicians are now charged with adding life to years, rather than just years to life. This workshop will equip participants with the knowledge to distinguish between the key traits of major dementia types: Alzheimer's, vascular, and Lewy body, and will offer real-life caregiving strategies tailored to each stage. Attendees will learn hands-on techniques for promoting social interaction, creativity, and physical engagement, fostering an environment of empowerment. By applying these "CAN DO" strategies, learners will re-turn to their settings ready to create more supportive, engaging, and dignified care experiences for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
